The Angola Surf Guide

Your best chance of riding the secret waves of Angola is around Luanda and Ambriz, and in the months from March till October you should have the best shot at finding epic waves in Angola. The later you go in this period the bigger the swell should be.

Also you might want to stay clear of March and April as these are the months where almost 80 percent of the annual rainfall in Angola is pouring down.

You can wear your board short except July-October where you might need a shortie for back-up as the temperature can drop to 18 Celsius, even though you are most likely to be surfing waters warmer than 20 Celsius. Be sure to bring all your equipment from home as well as extra fins and leashes as there is no surf shop to find i Angola, yet.

Go Search for Surf in Angola

Angola has a lot of waves to offer so rent/buy a 4×4 and go searching up and down the coast. In general the population is very welcoming, especially outside Luanda, and you will find lots of cozy coves up rewarding you with excellent surf.

Take a look on Google Earth and see just how many places perfect waves could happen. Just keep in mind that sharks are a risk at these coasts.

Look out for…

Sharks and crocs should haunt these waters but ask around at the spots and beware whenever you are in the water.

After 40 years of civil war, there are areas where land mines are a serious threat but luckily not much along the coast. Use an updated guidebook, ask the locals and always follow paths which are still being used and you should be alright.

Also beware of the risk of getting Malaria in Angola.

Some of Angolas Surf Spots:

Cabo Ledo: 125 kilometers south of Luanda you will find this wave which in winds from East to North a swell from south to west offers supreme waves. Look for the old light house. If you are in a 4×4 you should be able to drive all the way to the beach or else you have to walk the last bit to the beach.

Ambritz Beach: Just north of the small airport of Ambritz (100 kilometers north of Luanda) you will find a white sand road towards the beach. You’ll get to a small cove which is reportedly “paradise on earth” with great waves and a beautiful beach. There is a point break and breaks along the beach.

Barra da Kwanza: 80 kilometers south of Luanda, just across the bridge to Quicama National Park Turn right at the first dirt road after the bridge and you will end at the beach where you can park. From here you’ll walk southward. At Barra da Kwanza there is two point breaks and a reef break. But beware of sharks as you are still pretty close to the river mouth.

Buraco: 40 kilometers south of Luanda you can turn right and drive another eight kilometer north on the Mussulo Sand Pit. Then you will arrive at Buraco. This spot works best when the bigger swells hit Angolas coast as it is pretty protected from the direct swells.

Shipwreck: Just at the beginning of the Mussulo Sand Pit you find Shipwreck. More than 100 meters out you will find nice sandbars making pretty powerful waves. Get here early to avoid the strong onshore winds and look out for sharks.
